It's not necessary to know that at the center, there is a zero directional sum for gravity. The prevailing gravity is outer surface toward inner surface and visa versa. It will compress until the lateral gravity matches the compressing gravity. The net result is hollow sphere with gravity being same on inner and outer surfaces. There is this concept blocking thing that says the earth cannot be hollow. Belief says it must be solid, but puzzling or thinking about it, makes it hollow. It's very easy to show with an undergroud gravitation measurment. Saying it's solid is similar to saying it's flat. The solution to knowing is simplistic.
